Tesla’s China-Made EV Sales Rise 9.3% in January Amid Weak Domestic Demand
Tesla delivered 69,129 vehicles from its Shanghai factory in January, marking a 9.3% increase from the same period last year. The figures place Tesla third among electric vehicle sellers in China, trailing BYD's 205,518 deliveries and Geely's 124,252 units. Despite the growth, the data from the China Passenger Car Association does not indicate a broader recovery in consumer demand.
Exports continue to play a significant role for Tesla, with the Shanghai plant producing Model 3 and Model Y vehicles for both domestic and international markets, including Europe and the Asia Pacific region. European registrations showed a slight uptick, but China's market remains sluggish as high prices and reduced incentives deter buyers.
Competition in the world's largest electric vehicle market remains fierce, with local brands undercutting Tesla on price across nearly every segment. The company's performance highlights the challenges of sustaining growth in an increasingly crowded and price-sensitive market.
